Baking for The Future: Filling the Freezer

Today I cooked up a really big batch of rice. I put 2 cups each in freezer bags and off the the freezer it went...Rice takes so long to cook, this makes for a nice shortcut.I also had cooked a Boston butt pork roast...approx 10 pounds in the slow cooker yesterday. I then put it in the fridge to cook. This morning, I scooped off all the fat, trimmed off all the fat and then just shredded it up.

This meat is so full of fat...I then took it and warmed it up in the microwave to get the fat still left in the meat to liquefy. I put it then in a colander and ran hot water over it until i got all the fat I could out of it. Squeezed the excess water out of the meat, and packed in freezer bags...I put about a cup of meat in each bag.

These are perfect for BBQ Sandwiches or putting in casseroles, etc.
I have a few recipes I want to share tomorrow.
If you did any batch baking or cooking....share it with us...Share recipes too. I need ideas

Friday Show and Tell: The Parent's Edition #1-January 30, 2009

Welcome the the first edition of "Show and Tell, The Parent's Edition.
I wanted a place where parents could share with other parents their
  • accomplishments
  • awards
  • breakthroughs
  • field trips
  • special moments
  • funny things your child said
  • successful teaching methods or curriculum
Basically, this is an easy thing...don't think of it complicated. We all have things that happen in our week with our kids that we immediately want to share or "light bulb" moments with our kids that we want to share.

This is the place...we can learn so much from each other and encourage each other in this journey with our children.

Please copy the button at the top of this post and place it at the top of your post, then link it back to this post.

Use the Mr Linky to add your post to this one.

Thanks

My Show and Tell for this week,

My Daughter: Type A Personality

My daughter is such an individual. I am always having to remind her that I am the parent and she is the daughter. These boundries are easily confused.

She has so many great qualities, she is very organized, is usually good at leadership. These things don't always come with patience and a calm spirit. This was illustrated this week when she was put in a leadership position.

She and 3 other teens lead a group of some 40 other teen in a "Rush Night". They were to come up with ideas and put together a booth with food and decorate for competition with another team. They did very well!

My daughter did however learn some lessons....She wanted to do it all and there was NO WAY! She had to learn to let others do their part and wait on them, even if it didn't get done the way she would have done it.

She did so great on the organization and the food and then she had to learn her lessons on patience and letting go of what she had no control over.

It was a great learning experience! I was a proud mama....

So What do you have to share.....?

$200 Cash or Check Giveaway

You have to go over to Choyster Cash and check out her Bloggy Giveaway....She has actually taken back some of her birthday presents to put the money together for the giveaway.

Anyway, it is a really nice giveway! so go and check it out.

Tackling a New Meme For Parents

My tackle for the Tuesday is a New Meme!

I am so excited. I first was introduced to the "World Of Blogs" about a year ago. I have been learning so much from all the ladies and gentlemen on the "Web". The memes have been a great source of information for me.

I decided that all us Parents need a meme.....

And so....."Friday Show and Tell....The Parents Edition" Was born.

I wanted a place where parents could share with other parents
  • accomplishments
  • awards
  • breakthroughs
  • field trips
  • special moments
  • funny things your child said
  • successful teaching methods or curriculum
Basically, this is an easy thing...don't think of it complicated. We all have things that happen in our week with our kids that we immediately want to share or "light bulb" moments with our kids that we want to share.

This is the place...we can learn so much from each other and encourage each other in this journey with our children.

Here is an example of a post.
This is a story a friend told me....

She was praying with her 3 children who she homeschools and the youngest one was not so much as reverent as maybe he should be.. So, Mom proceeded to explain to the young fella that when we pray to God, we are in his presence...we enter the throne room with God.... She thought about it and said, " Mom, why does God need a throwing room for ?" lol
Precious, Out of the mouth of babes.

Again, I am so excited about this meme. I will start it this friday. I look forward to all you coming back and sharing all your experiences and stories this friday.

Be sure to bookmark this blog!

See you back here Friday!

Coupons Pay Off!!! I Promise!!!

IDid fairly good this week on sales....I haven't had alot of time to concentrate on sales and coupons....but..

When I went to Kroger and Walgreens the week they had some clearance baskets out so.........I noted what they had so I could check my coupons at home and try to get some good deals.

I first went to Kroger and they had several hair colors marked down drastically. The Nice and Easy Perfect 10 was marked down from 14.99 to 4.00.
That all by itself is a great deal...but we can't stop there can we?
had two coupons:
$5.00/2
$2.00/1
So I got 3 of the hair colors which =$12.00
Took off the coupons=-$7.00
I got $44.97 worth of hair color for $5.00

I then went to Walgreen...coupons in hand.

The Sunsilk Hairstyling products were $1.09 each (Regular $4.29)
Coupon $2.00/2
I bought 6 products
$25.74 worth of product for .54 after coupons

Also they had clearanced their Biofusion Organics Shampoos and conditioner from $7.99 each to $2.19 each. I bought 8 of these
There was an easy saver coupon $2.00/1
$63.92 worth of product for $1.52
Plus I got a $2.00 RR.....So this all actuall cost me .07 !!!!!!!

All together I got $134.63 worth of product for $5.06
Not a bad day.
Tip....When you see clearance bins....if the items are around 2.00 or 3.00 or less...you can usually find a coupon to match with them to bring the price down, down, down.....

Baking For the Future

I had some very ripe bananas on my hands....so what do you do?

You make banana bread of course. Only problem is banana bread doesn't really tranport well. My husband doesn't like how it gets crumbs all over his van...so this time I made banana mini muffins. They are two or three bite size.

I made them up and then I put three in a baggie and froze them...ready for sack lunches or a quick breakfast.

Here is the recipe I use with my changes included. :)
Lynne's Banana Bread
7 Ripe Bananas, mashed
1 1/2 cups sugar
4 eggs, lightly beaten
2 cups white all purpose flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup (5 minute cook) Oats (uncooked)
2 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
chopped nuts (optional)

Mix bananas, sugar, and eggs. Sift flour, salt, and baking soda. All to banana mixture. Add nuts.
Bake @ 325 degrees
I put mine in mini muffin tins...They cook more quickly..approx 20 minutes...but watch cause I didn't really time them, I am just guessing....;)

If you bake them in a loaf...bake 1 hour

This recipie is great because there is not butter or oil....just spray pam for the muffin tin...

Next time I am going to reduce the sugar....any ideas on what how much to reduce it?

Let me know any ideas you have on making this healthier.

Doing this type of baking and having theses yummy treats in snack size prepared in the freezer saves money.

When I am fixing lunches for everyone...I just pop on of these in the bag. If I have to grab something on the run, I grab one. These are GREAT frozen....really and they are great for breakfast...

Whats Better Than a Free Movie!

I know this has been mentioned several times by several ladies...but yesterday...it came to me how much this "WORKS FOR ME!!"

Have you see those Red Boxes where you can rent movies. They are located in Walmarts, outside Walgreens and McDonalds in our town.

You can rent DVD movies for $1.00 for one night. THIS IS A GREAT DEAL!

BUT WAIT, IT GETS BETTER!

On Mondays....Red Box gives out a code for a free rental for one night.

Now this is one free rental per ATM card....lol..

We have 5 ATM Cards in our family. I only realized this yesterday......What made me realize this you say?

My husband was sick in bed for the second day. On a Monday.....Well, court TV was not amusing him in the least. So he asked if I could go rent him some movies....We do not have cable TV by the way...only local channels by antenna.

I just went online and searched for Monday Code for Red Box and off we went. We got 5 movies for him and he was happy...He watched all of them...poor baby.

Just don't forget to return them all the next day...lol

Used to when he'd get sick, I 'd go rent several movies from the local rental and it'd cost over $10.00. I hate that.

Even if his sick day was not on a Monday....We would only pay $1.00 per movie...BIG SAVINGS!

Here is a link to get Red Box Codes!

Cleaning Frenzy at our House!!

At our house we have been cleaning out and moving everything....It is a mess right now.

We have been in our house for 17 1/2 Years. I am a pack rat. But we are trying to let go of "STUFF"!

I am finishing up homeschooling my oldest child this year and am trying to let go of so many books and software and stuff like that.

My mom died last year and she lived with us....I had been able to get rid of alot when moving her in but there was still alot here and still is in the attic....Oh the attic, I can 't go there.

We have cleaned out drawers, closets.....if it stands still and opens, it has gotten cleaned out.

Two truck loads to the dump and two truck loads to Goodwill.

We still have alot to do, but we are getting there.

I have not picks but you can visualize it I am sure.

It is just so hard to get rid of stuff......you don't use it for years, right and as soon as your let go of it.....guess what....you need it.

Oh well.

Wish me luck!

History Will Be Made This Week! The Presidential Inauguration

For all you homeschool families out there...Here are some fun facts to go along with the history making week we are having the privilidge to witness this week.

Also listed below are some official links to get more info on this event.

Fun Facts
George Washington's inauguration was held in New York City on April 30, 1789.

Inauguration Day was changed to January 20, from March 4, in 1933 by the passage of the Twentieth Amendment to the US Constitution.

Bill Clinton's, January 20, 1997, inauguration was the first inauguration to be broadcast live over Internet.

George Washington gave the shortest inaugural address in history. (135 words)

In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was the first president to include African-Americans in his inaugural parade.

In 1917, Woodrow Wilson was the first president to include women in his inaugural parade.

When January 20 is on a Sunday, the president-elect usually takes the oath of office privately and then repeats the ceremony in public on Monday.

Here are some really great links to help your children get into this event even more so:

Handcrafted Soaps! A Consumer Review

A Consumer Review: Introducing Spotted Cow Soaps

I recently came across a site called "Spotted Cow Soaps" selling homemade soaps, scrubs other goodies for bathtime. All items are handcrafted of 100% pure and natural ingredients in the heart of Vermont.
This site struck me because of how visually appealing the Christmas line was.

Gingerbread Whipped Sugar Scrub
(see what I mean, looks good enough to eat)

Gingerbread Soap

I was intrugued by just the pictures of this soap...I am allergic to most sented items, so I am always skeptical..I can't tell you how many times I have ordered something and when I got it, it made me physically sick.

Well, we are rushing around getting ready for the holidays and when the package came, I was so excited. I needed a good, long tub soak!! The packaging was adorable. Again, visually appealing.

I ran the bathwater and put in my gingerbread bath fizz....I got 3 of these for $3.00. Wonderful sent and I melted away in the bath. NO ALERGIC REACTIONS HERE! :) I used the Gingerbread Soap. Wonderful! Left my skin feeling soft and clean with no residue left behind. I have extremely dry skin, itchy in the winter. After my bath my skin felt soft. I LOVE the Bath fizzy thingies.

When I got out of the tub, my skin had a wonderful light smell ...I felt so pampered.

I also got some the the gingerbread sugar scrub....Oh My GoOdNeSs!!!!

The smell, the sugar scrubbed away all the dead skin and then just dissolved into a creamy lather that rinsed away in the bath water...making the bath water smell wonderful....Can you say AWESOME!

I am quite sure that I didn't gain any weight while using these products, but the thought crossed my mind that I might...lol

With these items being mostly Christmas themed...I thought you'd be interested in some of her upcoming items for Valentines Day!!

Where Have I Been For So Long!!!?

I am sorry for the lack of post as of late....I have been enjoying the holidays. After that we have been doing some massive cleaning out and moving stuff around in the house....Then I had to get ready to go with my honey on a Bahama Cruise.....

We got a fabulous deal....I mean really good. NCL had a balcony room, 4 night cruise for .......are you ready....$249.00 each person....!!!!!!!

We went with another couple and had a blast....3 islands, and lots of food....lol

It was awesome.

There are some great deals out there right now. We went through expedia.com. Be sure to shop around all the sites....orbitz, expedia and any other you come across...the prices are different and can be different from day to day.

I even heard of some couples getting inside rooms for $99.00 each.....WOW!

Can you say cheap vacation!

Good luck!
